Tips for Smarter Use of Your Reward Credit Card

At first glance, reward credit cards look very, very good because there seems to be so much that you can gain simply from owning and using one. And this article is not about to dispute that fact because reward credit cards are truly wonderful. It won’t continue to be wonderful, however, if you don’t start using your reward credit card wisely.

For tips regarding smarter use of your reward credit card, do read on.

Being Aware of the Interest Rate

There’s no question that reward credit cards possess higher interest rates compared to what non-reward credit cards charge you with. What you should be busy with is comparing the interest rate your reward credit card is charging you with the rate of other reward credit cards. If you discover that the rate of your reward credit card inexcusably higher then it may be time to switch reward credit card companies.

The Rewards Matter

Take the time to check the types of rewards, free items and prizes that other reward credit card companies are giving away to their own clients. Then, compare those rewards to the rewards you are presently receiving from your credit card company. If you’re holding the shorter end of the stick, it might be better to change lanes.

Secondly, to maximize the use of your reward credit card, try to concentrate on your needs rather on your wants. If, for example, the accumulated reward points you have can let you own of these two things – a brand new refrigerator or a high-end foot spa, which do you think should you choose? If your food is spoiling for the past few months because of a malfunctioning refrigerator, do go for the wiser choice.

The System Also Matters

How much dollars do you have to spend in order to earn one reward point? What’s the cash value of one reward point? Whatever the value you come up with, do try once more compare it with other reward credit card companies. If you once again come up as the one at a disadvantage, you know what to do then.

Promptness Pays

The early bird catches the worm first or something like that and that’s how things work with reward credit cards as well. If you pay on time or at the very least, prior to the cutoff date, you won’t have to worry about paying more because of the interest charges.

Follow these simple rules and you’re certified to be a smart user of your reward credit card!

How to Improve Your Credit Score

In today’s world having good credit is an absolute must. Credit is no longer for simply buying items today and paying for them later. Now, credit is used to validate who you are as a person and your worth. Credit scores are utilized daily in life. By following some simple rules, you can keep your credit score at its highest points.

Understand that your credit score is a living and breathing animal. It is ever changing and has its up days and down days. Perhaps your credit score is 600 right now. Tomorrow it could be 595 and next week 615. The smallest detail can change your score for better or worse.

Utilization

This is the big killer for most people. Utilization basically means the amount of your total credit ability you are actually using. Here is an example breakdown:

You have (5) credit cards with a total combined credit line of $10,000.
You currently owe $3,000.
You are using $3,000 of your $10,000 maximum thus your utilization is 30%.

The goal is to keep your utilization under 30%. A high utilization can destroy your credit score. In fact, I have personally seen a high utilization cost a person about 100 points. One hundred points is huge.

To keep your utilization low, you want to do two things.

1. The first is pretty obvious—Don’t use too much of your credit.
2. Next, work to increase your credit lines. Bug your creditors constantly for credit line increases. Some allow you to request credit increases every so often and some are automatic. Always work to increase your credit lines.

Inquiries

There are two types of credit inquiries—Soft and Hard. Soft inquiries don’t affect your credit rating at all. Soft inquiries are generally created when you view your own credit report and other minor requests. A hard inquiry can hurt your credit score. When you apply for credit, a hard inquiry is usually created.

Typically one or two inquiries in the past six months won’t harm your score, but more than this will start taking your score down. Also some potential creditors will look at how many inquiries you have in the last six to twelve months. If you have more than one or two, you might be denied credit.

The moral here is to only apply for credit when you are pretty sure of being approved and when you need it for personal or credit building reasons.

Accuracy

The last thing to do is make sure all your credit data is correct. Most credit reports have errors on them and you can indeed have information changed and even removed. To find out how, visit CreditLiberty.com, which is a credit repair information website.

If you have false late payments, incorrect credit lines, incorrect credit balances, incorrect account types or payment history mistakes, your credit score will be reduced. You owe it to yourself to check your credit report with Experian, Equifax and Trans Union very often. At the very least, check your credit report twice per year and always check it before you apply for credit. In fact, you should check it well in advance because correcting information on your credit report normally takes about 30 days.

How Credit Repair Saved My Life

Filed under: Credit — Jake Truman @ 10:16 am

Once upon a time in my life, I was dead. Dead not in the physical sense mind you, but the consumer sense. You see, I had bad credit. Actually, bad credit would have been an upgrade. I even got a denied letter for a debit card. That’s right, the bank did not trust me with my own money. It was so bad that I thought life was over—and I was only starting my twenties.

What They Teach You

Nothing of use really. We are taught, through our societal guidelines, that we are to obtain credit to buy items. It works like magic. One minute you are just getting by and the next minute you have a kind company willing to loan you hundreds to thousands of dollars—all for a price. We are taught to go buy items of our dreams and not to worry. Just pay your small monthly fee and all will be fine.

What Happens if I Miss Payments?

All is not fine if you get in over your head. Most of us grow up getting credit lines and not knowing the first thing about credit itself. If we did, oh how different we would act. However, that day almost always comes when you miss your first payments. For many of us that is just the beginning. For me, it was one missed payment at first and then many missed payments. The many missed payments became many collection accounts, a reposed vehicle and more.

As you might now, missing payments leads to a lower credit score. We are told that once we mess up, that is it for seven long years. Ruin your credit at 18 and wait until you are 25 to start at it again. Mess it up at 26 and wait until your mid 30’s. Why would they be so harsh? The answer is five large letters—M-O-N-E-Y.

Why are They Lying to ME?

Why do most humans lie? For personal gain of course. By holding you down in the bad credit well, you can be taken advantage of. Sure, you may still be able to get an auto loan, but now it will cost you 29% interest. Are you insane? Back to my youth, I was way past this point. I could not even get approved for a secured credit card.

Think about this for one moment. How many advertisements have you seen in your lifetime where the company said something like bad credit is ok or they lead the way in second chance financing. If you had a way to repair your credit back to normal, companies like this would lose billions of dollars each year. Moreover, there would be no need for credit agencies like Equifax, Experian and Trans Union. These companies make a fortune annually because of negative credit reporting.

Credit Repair is a SCAM!

This is what we are fed daily isn’t it? The truth is somewhere in the middle, as usual. Many places that offer credit repair are indeed bad news. However, many do indeed work. The worst lie is that you are helpless for seven years. Did you know there is a way to correct your credit report on your own? It does not take any supreme knowledge or special connections inside the powers that be.

So how did credit repair save me? Well, it opened my eyes to the possibilities and cast the lies into the darkness where they belong. It made me go read and understand the laws that govern the credit arena. It helped me realize that I did not have to let bad companies, who claim to simply be helping those in need, take advantage of me. Finally, my journey allowed me to reclaim my credit identity and experience life as it was meant to be.
